Cleveland Classical Guitar Society Showcase Concert

Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Classic Guitar Society presents the Showcase Concert on September 27, 2014, featuring internationally-renowned guitarist Jason Vieaux.

Showcase Concert headliner Jason Vieaux performs in his hometown of Cleveland amid a tour that includes Lincoln Center as well as other stops in North America, South America, and Europe. His 12th CD “Bach: Vol. I, Works for Lute”, was a top 20 Classical Billboard CD, and Zapateado from his 13th CD, “PLAY” (2014) was chosen as one of NPR’s 50 Favorite Songs of 2014 (so far) on June 30, 2014. In 1992 he set a record which still stands as the youngest winner of the world’s largest guitar competition, the Guitar Foundation of America, and today he teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music and performs around the world. Also on the concert program are Youngstown State University’s professor of guitar Francois Fowler and nationally renowned guitarist Robert Gruca. The Showcase Concert is the first concert of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s 2014-2015 International Series. A fun, popular and free event, this concert is the perfect introduction to the classical guitar.

The Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s International Series is presented with support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, the Ohio Arts Council, and the National Endowment of the Arts.

Other highlights of the six concerts of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s 2014-2015 International Series include 3 Cleveland debuts and the first appearance of Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet in over a decade. This season’s performers come from Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Bosnia, and the U.S.

In addition, the CCGS’ educational outreach initiative offers ongoing music classes to 100 students in Cleveland and Akron.

New Weekly Radio Show

The St. Louis Classical Guitar Society is pleased to announce its new classical guitar show, hosted by the Radio Arts Foundation St. Louis (at http://rafstl.org/)on analog radio at FM107.3 and in hybrid digital at KIHT HD2 (96.3). Content is also streamedlive at www.rafstl.org.Archives of the show will be available on the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society website for later listening access at www.GuitarStLouis.net

The show is entitled "Inside Classical Guitar," produced and funded through the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society. The show Host is William Ash, St. Louis Classical Guitar Society President, and Co-Hosted withlongtime St. Louis Radio Personality John Clayton.

The general focus of Inside Classical Guitar will be to feature both interviews and quality recordings of outstanding classical guitarists--both emerging talent and artists of significance--with discussions of interest to guitar followers. Many of the playersto be featured will be ones that the St. LouisClassical Guitar Society has sponsored or willbe sponsoring in liveperformance in St. Louis.


The first installment airs Monday, May 6, 7:00 – 8:00 pm CST. Our first show will feature our wide-ranging interview with American guitarist Christopher Parkening, where our discussion includes his reasons for his recent retirement from active touring. And of course we will play some of his most beautiful and legendary recordings.

Upcoming shows will feature guitarists with special connection to St. Louis, all of whom will be performing at our 50th Anniversary Gala Celebration on Sunday, June 9, at the Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Among our Special Guests will be none other than Christopher Parkening himself! Mr. Parkening will also conduct a Commemorative Master Class earlier that same day.

Subsequent editions of Inside Classical Guitar throughout the month of May and June 3 will feature interviews and music from the following guests:

St. Louis Classical Guitar Society Welcomes Christopher Parkening to its 50th Anniversary Celebration

On June 9, 2013, the Music Program in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts of St. Louis University will host and sponsor a special Commemorative Master Class to be conducted by the legendary American classical guitarist Christopher Parkening. This class is co-presented in cooperation with the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society in its day-long cele- bration of the 50th Anniversary of its founding on June 9, 1963, with Mr. Parkening also serving as Honorary Chair of its 50th Anniversary Committee. The Class will be held in University Theater at Xavier Hall on the St. Louis University campus, 221 N. Grand Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri 63103, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Admission will be $20 for adults and families, $5 for individual pre-college students. Three performance spots are open to competitive audition. Performance applicants should submit three unedited pieces of contrasting styles by 11:00 pm CST May 5, 2013, on the Guitar Society’s website at www.GuitarStLouis.net. The Guitar Society will also be joined by Mr. Parkening at its 50th Anniversary Commemorative Dinner to be held at the Missouri Athletic Club, 405 Washington Ave, St. Louis, MO, 63102, beginning at 5:30 pm. Attendance is $75 per person, which includes admission to the master class. St. Louis Classical Guitar Society to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

The St. Louis Classical Guitar Society will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its founding during 2013. The first St. Louis appearance in ten years of the world-renowned Paco Pena Flamenco Dance Company on February 28 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center, UMSL campus, is the first of several high-pro- file activities presented to raise community awareness of its Jubilee year. In addition, on June 9--in commemoration of the actual date of its founding as the George C. Krick Classic Guitar Guild in 1963--the Society will hold a gala Commemorative Dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club, 405 Washington Ave, St. Louis, MO, 63102, with focus on the singular achievements of the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society. St. Louis guitarists and educators both past and present who have sustained and furthered the art of the classical guitar in St. Louis and beyond will be featured as special guests. In addition, the Gala will also include a retrospective look at classical fretted instrument players hailing from St. Louis who were among the most important national figures of the guitar, mandolin, and banjo: William O. Bateman (1825-1883), William Foden (1860- 1947), and George C. Krick (1872-1962). Gala Sponsorships are being sought and the public is invited.
