"Arion" Summer Guitar Academy Call for Artists and Lecturers

Posted By Erin Young, Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Supporting a cultural institution on the border of Europe

Event: Summer Guitar Academy «Arion»

When: August 3rd - 8th, 2016

Where: Molyvos, Lesvos island, Greece

The Molyvos Tourism Association is a non-profit organization which aims at developing the economic and social growth of Molyvos as well as of the wider region of Lesvos. One means by which we try to do so is by highlighting the cultural resources of our island.

For this reason, we have created the Summer Guitar Academy “Arion”, an institution which has been taking place for the past 4 years and focuses on showcasing the role of the guitar within the wider musical scene. Important artists from all over the world come to visit Molyvos, the homeland of the first guitar-singer-poet «Arion», in order to participate in our Summer Guitar Academy. The philosophy of the “Arion” Academy is to approach the guitar, not as an end in itself, but as means of expression, of creation, of aesthetic cultivation and as a means to establish communication with other instruments and with other forms of Art. Within this framework, the «Arion» Academy includes projects on the following:

- The repertoire and the interpretation of the classical guitar (including seminars, lectures, concerts and competitions)

- The multiple roles of the guitar in different kinds of music (such as jazz or traditional music)

             - The role of the guitar in ensembles

- The relationship of the guitar with poetry (song composition and accompaniment, alternative education of poetry).

Despite the difficult circumstances the island of Lesvos has been facing, mainly because of the refugee situation, we are determined to preserve our cultural institutions such as that of the Guitar Summer Academy «Arion» by inviting significant guitarists and artists from all over Greece and from abroad to come participate in this event with us. Therefore, we would like to ask for the support of the GFA members. It would be of great significance to us if guitarists would be willing to participate as soloists and seminar/lecture professors on a volunteer basis. Of course, we would cover all the accommodation and food expenses.

The Summer Guitar Academy «Arion» will take place August 3rd-8th, 2016 in Molyvos, on the island of Lesvos. As we would like to announce the details of the Summer Academy as early as possible, it would be ideal to receive responses before the beginning of February.

Thank you in advance.  We look forward to your reply.

Korina Vougiouka, artistic director

Nikolaos Molvalis, President of the Tourism Association of Molyvos

The Consortium for Guitar Research announces The Andrew Britton Fellowship

Posted By Erin Young, Tuesday, January 12, 2016

The Consortium for Guitar Research

At Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge

A society of scholars and guitar players devoted to the musical history, the social history and the organology of guitars, but with special emphasis on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries

The Andrew Britton Fellowship

The Consortium for Guitar Research, an affiliate of the Royal Musical Association of Great Britain, invites applications from guitar researchers, at an early stage of their work, for a Fellowship in honour of Dr. Andrew Britton who died suddenly last autumn. The Fellowship covers accommodation and college meals during the three-day colloquium of the Consortium at Sidney Sussex College, The University of Cambridge, to be held from Saturday 9 April to Tuesday 12 April 2016. Because membership of the Consortium is by invitation only, this award provides a unique opportunity to share ideas with a group of acknowledged experts in the field. See www.guitarconsortium.wordpress.com for more information regarding the Consortium and its members.

Although there is no age limit, the applicant for the Andrew Britton Fellowship must be deemed to be at an early stage of their work. During the conference, the recipient is encouraged to give a 30 minute paper or other account of their current research, but this is not obligatory.

Applicants are invited to submit their CV, and a 400 word (maximum) statement describing their latest research and why this award would be useful to them. The application must be sent via email, in a word or PDF document, to Professor Christopher Page chp1000@cam.ac.uk by 20 February 2016.

The chosen candidate will be notified by 1 March 2016 and is required to accept the place by 7 March 2016. The Consortium reserves the right not to appoint to the Fellowship if they deem no applicant suitable. The successful candidate will fund their own travel and must ensure any necessary visas are in place.

Dr Andrew Britton was a Founding Member of the Consortium. His PhD thesis The guitar in the romantic period: its musical and social development, with special reference to Bristol and Bath is a benchmark to all new Scholars and is available online on the British Library Ethos site.

The Andrew Britton Fellowship is funded by the Larkum Fund of Sidney Sussex College.
