Experience Classical Guitar at Eastern Music Festival

Posted By Erin Young, Friday, January 29, 2016
Experience Classical Guitar at Eastern Music Festival
Open to classical guitarists ages 14 and up, Eastern Music Festival has expanded its program this summer to two weeks!  From July 16-30, you can join JASON VIEAUXJULIAN GRAY and KAMI ROWAN for an in-depth summer study experience you will never forget. Participants will collaborate with other instrumentalists and delve into new territories of chamber music, pedagogy, technique, and performance.  At EMF, you will spend two weeks at the leading international summer music festival, where you can re-charge your mind and spirit in a beautiful setting surrounded by world-class musicians.
A core component of the program is the individualized instruction each participant will receive from the three guitar faculty. Whether it be polishing works already in progress, improving technique or starting new repertoire, this one-on-one time with outstanding teachers will help you refine your individual playing skills.
The EMF Guitar Program will feature multiple classes and seminars focusing on a variety of topics. Led by faculty, these can cover performance development, fingerboard harmony and theory, technique, guitar literature and history, memorization techniques, transcriptions, career options as well as open discussions about current topics and trends.
All participants will rehearse and perform with the Festival Guitar Orchestra. In addition, there will be opportunities to work in small chamber ensembles with other instrumentalists as well as guitar duos, trios and quartets.
Each week, guitar participants will attend studio master classes led by guitar faculty members. Several will be invited by the faculty to perform in public master classes.
At EMF, you will have the opportunity to attend numerous guitar concerts and recitals featuring the guitar faculty and fellow program participants. You will also have access to all of the Festival's world-class orchestra and chamber music performances.
Eastern Music Festival’s Guitar Competition will feature both High School and College/Pre-Professional divisions. All Division I & II finalists will perform in a concert open to the public. Three finalists will be chosen from each division and the top two from both divisions will receive cash prizes. All participants in the Guitar Competition must be full-participants for the duration of the EMF Guitar Program (July 16-30).

Undergraduate & graduate/pre-professional - no age limit
Must be currently in 9-12 grades, or have graduated in May of 2016 and not yet attending college

"Arion" Summer Guitar Academy Call for Artists and Lecturers

Posted By Erin Young, Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Supporting a cultural institution on the border of Europe

Event: Summer Guitar Academy «Arion»

When: August 3rd - 8th, 2016

Where: Molyvos, Lesvos island, Greece

The Molyvos Tourism Association is a non-profit organization which aims at developing the economic and social growth of Molyvos as well as of the wider region of Lesvos. One means by which we try to do so is by highlighting the cultural resources of our island.

For this reason, we have created the Summer Guitar Academy “Arion”, an institution which has been taking place for the past 4 years and focuses on showcasing the role of the guitar within the wider musical scene. Important artists from all over the world come to visit Molyvos, the homeland of the first guitar-singer-poet «Arion», in order to participate in our Summer Guitar Academy. The philosophy of the “Arion” Academy is to approach the guitar, not as an end in itself, but as means of expression, of creation, of aesthetic cultivation and as a means to establish communication with other instruments and with other forms of Art. Within this framework, the «Arion» Academy includes projects on the following:

- The repertoire and the interpretation of the classical guitar (including seminars, lectures, concerts and competitions)

- The multiple roles of the guitar in different kinds of music (such as jazz or traditional music)

             - The role of the guitar in ensembles

- The relationship of the guitar with poetry (song composition and accompaniment, alternative education of poetry).

Despite the difficult circumstances the island of Lesvos has been facing, mainly because of the refugee situation, we are determined to preserve our cultural institutions such as that of the Guitar Summer Academy «Arion» by inviting significant guitarists and artists from all over Greece and from abroad to come participate in this event with us. Therefore, we would like to ask for the support of the GFA members. It would be of great significance to us if guitarists would be willing to participate as soloists and seminar/lecture professors on a volunteer basis. Of course, we would cover all the accommodation and food expenses.

The Summer Guitar Academy «Arion» will take place August 3rd-8th, 2016 in Molyvos, on the island of Lesvos. As we would like to announce the details of the Summer Academy as early as possible, it would be ideal to receive responses before the beginning of February.

Thank you in advance.  We look forward to your reply.

Korina Vougiouka, artistic director

Nikolaos Molvalis, President of the Tourism Association of Molyvos
